About this print:
I wrote this poem in the Knotty Pine cottage at In Cahoots Residency in June of 2020, the day I arrived for my second residency there. Coming straight from the first three months of the pandemic, of Endurance Parenting, Zoom teaching elementary school, worrying every day about my husband, a doctor treating COVID patients in the hospital, and being kept awake by helicopters overhead in Oakland on nights of deep unrest, I arrived feeling overwhelmed and daunted by the sudden quiet, fearful that my capacity to create had been fundamentally damaged. "Permission" was my letter to myself to get me through my own doubts. Exactly one marathon of a year later, facing my first hours back in the studio and finding I needed the reminder once more, I printed it as a broadside at Kala Art Institute in Berkeley.
