About this print:
The work currently in my studio are reflections on death, grief, loss and how community and relationships can suture the edges of those experiences. What happens when someone’s life suddenly disappears, without warning. How does one let go of someone beloved that is systematically losing their battle with a disease? When someone loses their life doing what they love – how do we reckon with that? When a life is lost – is the relationship you had with them lost as well? Why do we as a society often look at death as a loss, rather than a celebration of a life well lived? I have seen cancer, old age, strokes, alpine skiing and depression claim lives. The work, Empty Inside, are the pieces I started several years ago when my uncle, who was a metalsmith and artist, passed away. Empty Inside are paper spheres that are lined with metal leaf, and covered in a supporting structure made of “scales” that are etchings, lithos, relief and monoprints. The prints strengthen the paper orbs, and the interior invites the viewer to peer inside, often creating an illusion of depth and a quiet landscape of seeming nothingness. Empty Inside adapts and change to different contexts, reflecting myriad experiences with death, loss, healing and the many individuals that provide support through that process.
